One of France’s largest hospitals is to use Agfa Healthcare’s Orbis hospital and clinical information system to support the implementation of a full electronic patient record.

The 1,600 bed Centre Hospitalier du Mans will use Orbis to make patient histories and data available to medical staff. It says this will allow it to improve its workflow and anchor the implementation of a fully-fledged EPR.

“This project is of great strategic importance for us,” said centre director Philippe Roussel. “The new solution will enable us to optimise our workflow and enhance our ability to responsibly and safely manage patients within our facility.

“It will also enable us to more actively and efficiently work with external medical consultants, patients and the population at large.”

The Centre Hospitalier du Mans is the largest non-university hospital centre in France, with more than 1,600 beds over two sites in Le Mans and Allonnes. It is the leading employer in Le Mans, with more than 4,000 staff and 400 doctors.

It carries out more than 220,000 consultations a year, and admits nearly 60,000 patients – while almost 70,000 pass through its accident and emergency department.

Vincent Trely, director of information systems at the centre, said the Orbis clinical information system would give its healthcare professionals a common platform to work from and new tools to work with. “The improved fluidity of information across the enterprise will enable improved delivery of patient care,” he added.

Philippe Blanco, managing direct of Agfa Healthcare France said: “When completed, this project will be an important showcase for our CIS capabilities in Europe.”
